发明名称 REFLECTION TYPE OPTICAL MODULATION DEVICE
摘要 PURPOSE: To provide a reflection type optical modulation device having a high contrast ratio. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal layer 4 and an invariable refractive index layer 5 are interposed between a substrate member 2 on a reflection side constituted by including an insulating substrate 6, a reflection electrode 7 and a light shielding layer 8 and a substrate member 3 on a light incident and light exit side constituted to include a translucent substrate 9 and a transparent electrode 10. The invariable refractive index layer 5 is formed on the substrate member 2 and has recesses 5a of a triangle pole shape having a depth (d). The shape at the prescribed cut face of these recesses 5a is triangular. The angleαformed by a segment 15 bisecting the angle 2θg formed by the recesses 5a and the normal direction 14 of the insulating substrate 6 is set atα≠0. Incident light is made incident on the liquid crystal layer 4, is reflected by the surface of the invariable refractive index layer 5 and is condensed and absorbed to the light shielding layer 8 to attain a dark (black state) at nc > ng. The light passes the invariable refractive index layer 5 and arrives at the reflection electrode 7 by and from which the light is reflected and emitted to attain a bright (white state) at nc <= ng.
