PURPOSE: To provide an automatic focusing device improving operability by shortening the time required for detecting a focus by preventing low control scanning even when focus detection is impossible. CONSTITUTION: This device is constituted of a focus detecting photodetector part 1 provided with plural picture elements, which receives subject images divided into two images; a focus detection area switching part 2 inputting an output signal from the photodetector part 1 and selecting a 1st focus detection area 3 ordinarily set and a 2nd focus detection area 4 smaller than the area 3; and a focus detection execution part 5 receiving output from the switching part 2, detecting the focusing information of a photographing lens by performing specified arithmetic processing, evaluating whether the arithmetic result is appropriate, and performing arithmetic operation again after selecting the 2nd area 4 by the switching part 2 in the case of evaluating that the arithmetic result is inappropriate. |
