The system includes a computer module (120,130) which is installed in the vehicle and a portable module (200) which serves as an interface and carries user-defined data in its memory. A communication module (300) couples the portable module to the module fixed to the computer. The portable module has a keyboard for entry of alphanumeric data and a display which shows entered data and allow information from the fixed computer to be displayed. The fixed and portable modules communicate through a suitable coupling, which may be a wire link, an optical link or a radio-telephone link. The portable module is preferably a conventional personal organiser.
