The validation is carried out by reading or entering information from the cheque or plastic card, and sending this information to a central server which compares the information against lists of stolen or otherwise invalid cheques or cards. The result can then be displayed to the user. The information is read from the card after it has been inserted in a slot (4) at the front of the device. A key-pad (2) can also be used to dial the number of the telephone link to the central server. The data is translated into tone frequencies compatible with the telephone system, allowing the data to be transmitted to the central server.
