PURPOSE: To produce a magnetic recording medium ensuring low medium noise and excellent in coercive force and overwriting characteristics. CONSTITUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a nonmagnetic underlayer 2 and plural CoPt magnetic layers 3, 5 on a substrate. The magnetic layers are made of two or more layers, and a nonmagnetic middle layer 4 of a material cong. Cr and Mo as principal components is held between the magnetic layers. The difference [d(002) -d(110) ] between the crystal lattice interplanar spacing of the hcp (002) faces of each of the magnetic layers and that of the bcc 110 faces of the nonmagnetic middle layer just under the magnetic layer is 0.002-0.032Å. The nonmagnetic underlayer 2 is one or more layers, the nonmagnetic underlyaer just under the lowest one of the CoPt magnetic layers is made of a material contg. Cr and Mo as principal components, and the difference [d(002) -d(110) ] between the crystal lattice inter-planar spacing of the hcp (002) faces of the lowest one of the magnetic layers and that of the bcc 110 faces of the nonmagnetic underlayer made of the material contg. Cr and Mo as principal components is 0.002-0.032Å.
