PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the display of a discriminable character without having unnatural feeling even if a thinning is performed by stopping the update for every scanning line corresponding to the thinning of a liquid crystal display device using the reading address in a vertical direction. SOLUTION: A control part 4 calls a prescribed character from a memory 1 for character font for a graphic memory 2 for character and writes the character. A reading address generation part 5 generates horizontal and vertical image period signals from the horizontal and vertical synchronizing signals of a PAL system, performs a counting by the clock of the frequency which is possible to divide the image period in the horizontal direction generated by a clock generation part 3 into 320 and generates a horizontal address for reading. A vertical image period is counted by the horizontal synchronizing signal, the counting is temporarily stopped every time the thinning scanning line which is preliminarily determined by the liquid crystal display device having the display area of 320 in the horizontal direction×240 in the vertical direction is reached, a vertical address for reading is generated. The character font of a memory 2 is read.
