The processing system involves numbers of portable items or chip cards (1) used to settle payments due for goods and services, and for entry control etc. At least one communication device is included to exchange information between the processing system (2) and the chip cards. The cards are collected into a group or groups for processing. Defined processing operations are allocated to the processing group, and processing only happens if certain data from the cards is simultaneously available to the processing system. The processing system has a number of fixtures (12) to hold the chip cards, and can read and store current data (6) from the cards. Processing operations can be influenced by external conditions such as time, date and location.
