The invention relates to a process for rendering a polyamide frame retardant by adding to the melt of the polyamide an amine that does not contain an aromatic ring. It is highly surprising that a Class V-0 rating to UL-94 can be obtained by adding for example an aliphatic diamine, to which no flame-retardant properties were attributed. The amine is preferably added in an amount of at least 2 wt.%, more preferably 3 wt.%.
