The arrangement has a passive compensator element (11) with inductive reactance generating a capacitive current component which, when an earth fault occurs between phase and earth, compensates for the fault currents. The compensation element consists of a passive reactance element (21) which, on the occurrence of a fault on one phase conductor, can be connected to another conductor with a specific phase position to the faulty phase and its earth leakage current has a resistive component compensating for that of the fault current as well as a reactive component. The control system (15, 17) controls the inductive compensation current of the compensation element to vary it according to the level required to provide compensation.
