The synchronous machine has a modular construction provided by a number of axially stacked discs (1), each having a permanent magnet rotor and a stator with a pair of stator cores (6a,6b) and a multi-strand annular winding (7), formed from a conductor with a rectangular cross-section. The ratio between the sides of the winding conductor corresponds to the ratio between the inner and outer dia. of the annular stator cores, with rotation of the conductor cross-section in the radial direction, to allow 2 windings to lie in intimate contact. The stator cores are spaced to provide a cooling channel (8) between them, through which a cooling water flow is passed.
