A binder comprising an alkaline resol-type phenolic resin and polyvinyl carboxylate, characterized in that when the alkaline resol-type phenolic resin and the polyvinyl carboxylate are mixed with each other in using, the curing of the former and the saponification of the latter occur simultaneously to form a complex of a product of the curing with formed polyvinyl alcohol, though the phenolic resin and the polyvinyl carboxylate are present in a state separated from each other before use. The solvent to be used is preferably a mixture of an alcohol with water and the binder may further contain a borate. The binder can easily and strongly be cured at ordinary temperatures or by mild heating to exhibit excellent hot strengths.
