[Also in Division G2] Sensitizing dyes contain a grouping of the formula wherein R is H, alkyl 1-4C or halogen e.g. Cl, p is 0 or an integer, n is 1 or 2, X is O, S or =N-R 1 wherein R 1 is a alkyl, and M is H, alkali metal or an organic ammonium cation e.g. triethylammonium. The dyes are prepared by the usual condensation methods. In the merocyanine dyes the R.H. nucleus may be a rhodanine nucleus and in cyanine dyes it is a benzothiazole, quinoline, benzoxazole, or benzoselenazole nucleus which may contain a phenyl or methyl substituent. The methine chain of the cyanine dyes may carry an alkyl substituent. |
