摘要 High-frequency ultrasonic vibrations with a frequency greater than 20 Kiloherz are applied in a liquid medium to fibrous vegetable material to liberate bast fibres from associated non-fibrous vegetable matter. The method is especially employed for scutching unretted whole flax straw to yield flax fibre. Apparatus for performing the method comprises a liquid medium tank (23), an ultrasonic gateway (24a, 24b) mounted therein below the operational level of the medium, an input conveyor system (20, 21a, 21b) for advancing aligned flax straw below the liquid level and delivering it through a curtain of ultrasonic vibration with a frequency of at least 20 Kiloherz at the gateway (24a, 24b), an output conveyor system (25a, 25b, 26) for collecting flax fibre emergent from the gateway (24a, 24b) and carrying it out of the medium, and an outlet (27) at the bottom of the tank (23) for removing a slurry of separated tow particles therefrom.
