The fuel filling and vapour escape device for the vehicle fuel tank (16) has a housing on the outside of the tank holding an outlet for the vapour, collected in a canister (18) and a valve. The valve is completely open for a fuel level below a certain height, allowing virtually unthrottled flow of vapour to the canister. At a higher fuel level, the vapour flow is throttled and at a still higher level, the valve is fully closed and there is no fuel vapour flow. The filling pipe (36) includes the one-way valve (44) at the union with the tank to prevent the fuel from sloshing back into the pipe.
