PURPOSE: To efficiently decompose a halogenated hydrocarbon such as a chlorofluorocarbon gas and thereby, make it harmless by decomposing a substance containing a halogenated hydrocarbon and immobilize a substance which is produced by this decomposition simultaneously with the decomposition process. CONSTITUTION: A substance containing a halogenated hydrocarbon is decomposed into a halide and a hydrocarbon, etc., by a thermal decomposition method, etc., using a catalyst 1 such as a metal, a metal oxide or zeolite. In addition, the substance produced by the decomposition process is immobilized simultaneously with the decomposition process, using an adsorbent 2 such as a hydroxide of an alkali metal. Consequently, the adsorbent 2 is used by mixing it with the catalyst 1 or by bearing the catalyst 1 on the surface of the former. Thus a chlorofluorocarbon gas or the like is made harmless by decomposing it efficiently. The catalyst 1 should preferably be a metal such as iron, platinum or gold, a metal oxide such as CuO, TiO2 or ZrO2 , zeolite, etc. The adsorbent 2 should preferably be at least either one of a hydroxide of an alkali metal such as Li or Na, a hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal such as Mg or Ca, an oxide or the hydroxide of an amphoteric substance such as Si or Al. |
