[Also in Division C3] Films are prepared from ion-exchange resins consisting of units of formula alone or with units of formula where radicals R are m- or p-phenylene or p-diphenylene, n is 0 or 1, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are hydrogen atoms or aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radicals or, when n is 0, together form a polymethylene chain, and R<SP>2</SP> is a radical of formula where M is a transition metal and p is the degree of oxidation of the metal, the units having ion-exchange groups attached thereto and optionally being cross-linked. The resins are obtained by first condensing a dialdehyde of formula with a ketone of formula optionally cross-linking, e.g. by reaction with divinylbenzene or with a tetravinylsiloxane, and then introducing ion-exchange groups into the resins. Cation-exchange groups which may be introduced are sulphonic, carboxylic, phosphinic, phosphonic and arsonic groups, and anionic-exchange groups which may be introduced are amine, quaternary ammonium, phosphonium, sulphonium and sulphonamide groups. In examples, films are prepared from polycondensates of terephthaldehyde and acetone and converted to ion-exchange resins by sulphonation with chlorosulphuric acid, by chloromethylation with methoxychloromethane, followed by quaternization with trimethylamine, and by reaction with p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde to attach amine groups to the chain ends followed by quaternizing coupling with p-bis (chloromethyl) benzene; two of the films are cross-linked with tetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane before being converted to ionexchange resins.
