PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a monomer for the preparation of addition copolymers and free from environmental problem such as toxicity in high production yield and purity. SOLUTION: This acryloyl carbamate or acryloylurea is expressed by formula I (R<1> , R<2> and R<3> are each H, methyl or ethyl; R<4> is a 1-10C aliphatic, alicyclic, arylaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group; Y is oxygen atom or NR<5> ; R<5> is H or a 1-6C aliphatic, alicyclic, arylaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group), e.g. N-acryloylmethyl carbamate or N'-acryloyl-N-methylurea. The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting aβ-haloalkanoyl chloride of formula II (X is Cl or Br) or a urea compound in the presence of a trapping agent for hydrogen halide formed by the reaction, e.g. sodium acetate at 40-80 deg.C when the system contains a carbamate compound or at 0-50 deg.C when the system contains a urea compound.
