PURPOSE: To obtain anα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester salt having light color and high quality by bleaching the salt in high efficiency while suppressing the formation of a disalt using a simplified process dispensing with the removal and recovery of alcohol after bleaching. CONSTITUTION: Anα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester produced by the sulfonation of a fatty acid alkyl ester is esterified by adding 0.5-5wt.% of a lower alcohol and neutralized with an alkaline aqueous solution to pH4-7 to obtain an aqueous slurry containing anα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester salt. The slurry is bleached under a reaction condition of (1) anα-sulfofatty acid ester salt concentration of 20-80wt.%, (2) a hydrogen peroxide amount of 0.2-10wt.% based on theα- sulfofatty acid ester salt, (3) a reaction temperature of 105-135 deg.C, (4) a reaction pressure of 0.5-5.0kg/cm<2> gauge and (5) a reaction time of 1-6hr optionally in the presence of a viscosity-reducing agent.
