Method for the sepn. of starch and protein from powdered plant material to give an improved yield and better separation than existing processes, wherein the powdered plant material is treated with an aq. soln. of a suitable cpd. such as potassium or sodium sulphate, bisulphite, chloride or carbonate maintaining the soln. at a pH between 7.2 and 7.4 by addn. from time to time of a suitable basic material such as sodium bisulphite, sodium hydroxide, trisodium phosphate etc. The colloidal system formed in separted from the fibrous material and the starch allowed to settle and separated. The protein is then precipitated by adjusting the pH to the isoelectric point of the protein, and is separated off from the aq. layer. Improved process giving better yield and separation than known processes. |
