Date Jul. 7, 1994A novel anti-active oxygen agent which comprises as active ingredient an amino acid derivative represented by the following general formula (I): henyl, 2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl or pyridyl group, and one or more of the hydrogen atoms attached to the aromatic ring of these groups may be substituted with a halogen atom, or an alkyl, hydroxyl, hydroxyalkyl, nitro, alkoxyl or carboxyl group; R represents the side chain of an amino acid; X represents -CH2-NH- or -CH=N-; Y represents a hydrogen atom, -COOR1, -SO3H, -CON(R2)R3, -CONHCH(R5)COOR4 or -CH2OH (where each of R1 to R4 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, and R5 represents the side chain of an amino acid); and n represents an integer of 0 or 1; or its salt, and which inhibits generation of active oxygen species, has a high safety and can be prepared at relatively low costs.
