PURPOSE: To make it possible to vary the characteristic of the above device to a wider visual field angle characteristic and a narrower visual field angle characteristic of a better contrast with one unit. CONSTITUTION: An active matrix substrate 2 and a counter substrate 1 are oriented and disposed across a liquid crystal layer 30 and the substrate 2 is provided with picture element electrodes 3 in a matrix form. On the other hand, the substrate 1 is provided with electrodes 4 of a solid shape and electrodes 4' of a stripe shape across an insulating film 17. The lines of electric field force shown by broken lines are narrowed and the inclination of the liquid crystal molecules in the central part of the liquid crystal layer 30 is made into an increased state to narrow the visual field angle when voltage is impressed on the electrodes 4' by changing over a switch 22. On the other hand, the lines of electric field force shown by the broken lines are widened and the visual field angle is widened when the voltage is impressed on the electrodes 4. Oriented films 31, 32 are subjected to countermeasure for the wide visual field. |
