PURPOSE: To attain display whose contrast is high and whose visual field angle is wide in a liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with a smectic C phase liquid crystal 107 in which a liquid crystal molecule interposed between a pair of glass substrates 2a and 2b and which is one sided stably oriented and arranged in parallel with an electrode film, that is, a signal electrode 3a and a scanning electrode 3b, and a voltage is selectively impressed on the electrode film, so that the direction of the optical axis of the liquid crystal 107 is switched and the change of the optical axis of the liquid crystal is optically discriminated by polarizing boards 12a and 12b. |
