PURPOSE: To embody a partial change of the orientation direction on a substrate by irradiating a high-polymer oriented film formed on a substrate with linearly polarized UV rays, rotating the polarization direction and irradiating the high-polymer oriented film diagonally with the UV rays. CONSTITUTION: This device for controlling the orientation of liquid crystals consists of a UV light source 6 combined with a mercury lamp 2 and a linear polarization element 4, such as Wollaston prism, an irradiation light inclining means 12 for inclining the UV light linearly polarized from the light source 6 relatively at an arbitrary angle with the normal of the substrate 10 and a polarization direction changing means 14 capable of irradiating the substrate in the polarization direction arbitrarily to the reference direction of the substrate. The high-polymer oriented film is formed on the substrate 10, such as glass substrate, and is irradiated with the UV rays of the wavelength absorbed therein with a linearly polarized light state; thereafter, the irradiation light inclining means 12 and the polarization direction changing means 14 rotate/incline the substrate 10 with respect to the fixed light source 6 and rotate the polarization direction at 90 deg. with the polarized light for irradiating the orientation. In addition, these means incline the irradiation direction within the perpendicular plane inclusive of the polarization direction with respect to the substrate 10 and irradiate again the substrate 10. |
