PURPOSE: To prevent generation of burning by switching a gamma correcting characteristic and a correcting characteristic which is a reverse characteristic to the gamma correcting characteristic every specified time to correct an image signal. CONSTITUTION: The display device with burning preventing function is constituted with a memory part 16 for memorizing each data sent from APL detecting parts 11-13 which detect the average brightness level of an image signal every specified period, a discriminating part 17 which compares data from the memory part 16 with data inputted from the APL detecting parts 11-13 and discriminates the difference with a specified threshold, a timer 15 for counting the specified time, and a control part 14 which starts count of the timer 15 when the discriminating part 17 discriminates that the difference is smaller than the threshold and stops count when discriminates that the difference is larger than the threshold, and when count is performed for the specified time, switches correcting characteristics of ROMs 8-10 in which a gamma correcting characteristic and a correcting characteristic which is a reverse characteristic of the gamma correcting characteristic are memorized as a table.
