PURPOSE: To attain detection superior in sensor detection ability to be used for an automatic developing machine capable of coping with rapid development processing in the developing processing system of a small coating amount of silver by incorporating Yb<3+> ions. CONSTITUTION: The silver halide photographic sensitive material containing Yb<3+> ions as an infrared absorber is imagewise exposed and processed by the automatic developing machine and the presence of the photosensitive material is detected by an infrared detector set in the developing machine. These Yb<3+> ions have an absorption band based on the transition of<2> F7/2→<3> F5/2 andλmax is about 970nm. This absorption is different from coloring by that of transition metal ions and does not broaden and does not color in the visible region because they have no absorption there, thus permitting any infrared absorber containing the Yb<3+> ions to be used and any water-soluble salts, hardly soluble compounds, or vitreous substances to be used.
