PURPOSE: To provide an orienting film of uniform thickness having good printing property during formed by controlling the surface tension to a specified value or lower. CONSTITUTION: The surface tension of this orienting agent for a liquid crystal is controlled to <=40mNm<-1> . Further, the agent contains as a solvent component, one or more kinds of good solvents for the resin component and one or more kinds of bad solvents. The boiling temp. of the good solvent is preferably higher than the boiling temp. of the bad solvent. The polymer used as the resin component of the liquid crystal orienting agent is, for example, polyimide and polyamide acid. For a polymer among these having high solubility and a special structure, such a solvent having <=40mNm<-1> surface tension such as diethylene glycol dimethylether can be regarded as a good solvent. When polyimide or the like is used as the resin component, methanol, ethanol and the like may be regarded as the bad solvent. Thereby, the obtd. agent has good printing property for processing and a liquid crystal display element having good display property can be produced with a high yield. |
