PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having high reliability by forming a magnetic film on one side of a substrate and a soft magnetic film on the other side. CONSTITUTION: A magnetic film 2 of metal Co is formed on one side of a substrate 1 and a diamondlike carbon film 3 as a protective film and a lubricant film 4 are formed on the film 2. A soft magnetic film 5 is formed on the other side of the substrate 1 and a lubricant film 6 is formed on the film 5. The thicknesses of the films 2, 5 are regulated to 500-2,500Åand 500-5,000Å, respectively, and the film 5 is made thicker than the film 2. By back coating with the film 5, a line of magnetic force from the magnetic film is shielded, magnetic field transfer phenomenon is not caused even if an external magnetic field acts in a superposed state and the resultant magnetic recording medium can satisfactorily maintain S-N ratio and has improved reliability.
