<p>The seal, consisting of a lip seal (6) between the crankshaft (1) and the crankcase (2), has an additional wedge-shaped seal (8) fixed to the crankshaft between the seal lip (7) and the crankcase chamber, so that it protects the lip seal from the fluid pressure inside the crankcase chamber. The wedge-shaped seal is in the form of a split ring of an elastic material which can be fitted and locked to the appropriate part of the crankshaft and engages with a groove (9) in a ring (11) attached to the crankcase, either directly or through a second ring which holds the lip seal. The wedge seal can be of either trapezoid or rectangular cross-section.</p> |
