PURPOSE: To provide a picture reader which can automatically convert resolution to an optimum one based on picture information without depending on the judgement of an operator and in which a read picture does not become that which cannot be read and a picture cannot unnecessarily be processed with high resolution. CONSTITUTION: A resolution conversion processing part 12 converting the resolution of a read picture signal which is read by a picture read part 11 and a resolution discrimination processing part 14 discriminating resolution required for picture reading by a luminance signal generated from the read picture signal by a luminance component generation processing part 13 are provided. The resolution discrimination processing part 14 detects a matched block when the matching block of 3×3 is a fine line pattern, reads the picture with the highest resolution when the total of the fine line blocks in a page exceeds a reference value. When it is less than the reference value, redundancy is judged to exist in read resolution, and the resolution conversion processing part 12 executes a thinning processing and converts resolution to the lower one. |
