PURPOSE: To obtain a light emitting diode in which purification (deodorization), pasteurization, prevention against contamination, purification of water, etc., can be carried out through photocatalysis. CONSTITUTION: The light emitting diode comprises one or more LED chips 2 comprising a photosemiconductor crystal having pn junction principally emitting ultraviolet rays having wavelength in the range of 360-400nm, a lens 3 molded of transparent synthetic resin sealing the LED chip 2, a cap 6 made of transparent glass being applied integrally to the outer surface of mold lens 3, and thin photocatalyst 7 of titanium oxide carried on the surface of the cap 6. The photocatalyst 7 is activated by ultraviolet rays emitted from the LED chip 2 to form an active surface exhibiting oxidizing power thus decomposing an organic compound. The light emitted from the LED chip 2 may contain visible light. The mold lens 3 may be eliminated to obtain a stem type LED. |
