PURPOSE: To provide a cold cathode electric-discharge lamp having a proper starting characteristic, by applying a mixture, wherein electron emissive material is mixed in fluorescent material, to the inner surface of a glass tube. CONSTITUTION: A coating 4, made of the mixture of fluorescent material and electron emissive material, is formed on the inner surface of a glass bulb 1. As the electron emissive material,αtype alumina, having a grain size of the mean grain size of the fluorescent material of 80-120%, can be used. When a rare gas in a bulb 1 is excited, the ultraviolet ray energy of radiated short wavelength, is converted into visible light by the fluorescent material contained in the coating 4 to make the bulb 1 luminous. An electron, made collision with theαtype alumina out of electrons existing in the bulb 1, is emitted as a secondary electron into the bulb 1, thereby improving a starting characteristic.
