PURPOSE: To lessen the deterioration of magnetic characteristics by working and forming grooves to be packed with a nonmagnetic ceramic material up to a corner radius of <=5 to >=20μm in the bottoms thereof. CONSTITUTION: Both ends of a magnetic metallic film 2 are parallel removed by grinding using a metal-bonded diamond grinding wheel down to the groove depth (d) which is the sum of a gap depth G and the size of the corner radius (r) of the bottom of the grooves to form the grooves to be packed with the nonmagnetic ceramic material 3. Next, the nonmagnetic ceramic material 3, such as forsterite (2MgO-SiO2 ), is packed in the grooves by the thin film forming technique, such as sputtering, and the magnetic strains are removed by magnetic annealing to lessen the deterioration of magnetic output induced by the grooving. Finally, the surface opposite to magnetic tape is finished into an arc shape and the magnetic metallic film is cut to plural pieces of head chips by slicing, thereby, the composite magnetic heads are obtd.
