[Also in Division B1] Vinyl esters are prepared by reacting ethylene, molecular oxygen and a carboxylic acid in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising a noble metal (Groups VIII), an inert carrier, and an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, zinc or cadmium salt of an oxygen acid of phosphorus, or a mixture of two or more of such salts. Ortho-, pyro- and/or metaphosphates, or phosphites may be used and the reaction may be performed in two reaction zones with different phosphorus acid salts. Acetic, propionic, n- and isobutyric and valeric acids are mentioned and examples describe the preparation of vinyl acetate, and vinyl isobutyrate. |
