Fabrication of smart card with card made of paper or cardboard - having circuit glued into hole in card, paper fibres round hole compressed round the circuit, conductors laid over hole edge and varnish protection

The smart card has an integrated circuit (2) set in a paper or cardboard card (1). Contacts from the circuit (4) are brought to the outer face of the card. The card is cut from paper for cardboard, and a recess formed in the surface to accept the integrated circuit and the circuit connectors. The circuit is fixed in the hole by an adhesive placed in the bottom of the hole. The raw fibres at the edges of the hole in the card are compressed into a space left round the edges of the integrated circuit and the conductors laid over the edge of the hole. The assembly is then coated with a layer of varnish (6), placed over the circuit and partly overlapping the conductors, but leaving the end of the conductors bare.
