A process for preparing ashless and low-ash phenolic resole resins having no amine odor, and a process for preparing storage-stable mixtures or premix solutions of phenol-formaldehyde resin and urea or urea-formaldehyde resins. These processes react phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of an effective catalytic amount of a low-volatile and strongly basic tertiary amino alcohol either alone or in combination with an inorganic base.
