A nuclear fuel pellet (14) adapted to be received in an elongate sheath (12) to provide a nuclear fuel rod (10), comprises a fuel matrix (16) containing substantially uniformly dispersed fissile fuel element and a mass of neutron moderator (18) provided at the core of the fuel matrix for promoting combustion of the fissile fuel element lying adjacent the mass of neutron moderator.
