A manual electric wheelchair comprising an auxiliary power system which comprises human power detecting means constituted by a potentiometer (27) and the like, signal transmitting means constituted by a rotating transformer (39), control means constituted by a controller (35) and power transmitting means constituted by a drive motor, and gears (G1-G4) and the like. The human power detecting means, signal transmitting means, control means and a set of the drive motor and the power transmitting means are disposed about a hub (2a) of a drive wheel (2) and an axle (11) of a stationary plate (31) which is adjacent to the hub (2a) and locked by a frame (3), and the respective drive wheels (2) are detachably mounted to a vehicle body including the stationary plate (31). Accordingly, it is possible according to the invention to enhance mass-productivity of the manual type electric wheelchair by realizing a compact and reasonable arrangement of the auxiliary power system, reducing and shortening wiring or the like and facilitating manufacture and assembly of the wheelchair.
