The engine has several gas change valves with identical function, periodically actuated by different cam shaft (6) cams (9,10) via intermediate hauling levers (8). In dependence on the operational range of the engine, the hauling levers can be interlocked by shifting of couplers. Thus the gas change valve(s) are operable at different valve lift characteristics. At least one cam is held on the cam shaft with a limited swivel. Pref. the first cam (9) is allocated to a first operational range, while the swivelable second cam (10) is allocated to a higher RPM and/or higher load range.
