A melting furnace for the thermal treatment of waste containing heavy metal and/or dioxin, has a main furnace vessel which has a melting end for receiving a melt 8, a charging device 7 and a discharge chamber 14 separated from the main furnace vessel 1 by a separating wall 10. Chamber 14 is connected to the melting end by means of a siphon 9, heating elements are provided in the main furance vessel 1 and in the discharge chamber 15. To utilize the heat produced in the discharge chamber for the melting process and to dispense with a gas outlet in the discharge chamber, an opening 24 is provided in the separating wall 10 above the level N of the melt 8. The opening produces a free connection between the main furnace vessel 1 and the discharge chamber 15.
