Process for packaging tubular or cable products - in which product is coiled and heat stabilised by means of laser

The product to be packed, transported and stored is tubing or cable with a heat-sealable surface material coiled with at least two layers. The product is coiled inside a hollow cylinder with a laser beam directed at the point of contact between layers such that fusion of a small part of the outer surface occurs. The finished coil may then be shrink-wrapped or similar for transport. The tubing is directed to the coiling station (1) by means of transport rollers so that it is angled down towards the coiling former. A laser beam (10) in the delivery station (2) is directed to lie within the angle formed and to contact the surface of the first layer of coiled tubing. The laser is energised by a control system (3) when the first layer of tubing has been laid and causes a line of surface material to fuse, sealing the coils together. Pressure rollers (4) assist the fusion.
