The rpm limit rises in the range of low loads and in the range of higher loads is a constant rpm. As an additional gear changing criterion, the max. torque of a coupling, esp. the converter bridging coupling is stored. In a first step in a trial drive carried out in a direct gear operation, the rpm and the load are varied, and depending on acoustic and/or vibration criteria, a lower rpm limit is determined as a function of the load. The direct gear is changed down to the next lowest gear, as soon as with a given load the specific rpm limit is not reached.
