The loading indicator comprises a display device (4) mounted onto the upper part of the shopping trolley (1). The display device is easy to see and shows clearly whether the lower loading tray (2) of the trolley contains any shopping or not. The lower loading tray is mounted on springs (3), which provide an indication of loading even where this is light. A mechanical connection (12) is used to transmit the indication to the display device, which either shows Loaded or Unloaded. The display fittings may be added to the same type of unit as is currently used for coin deposit locks, or may be mounted as an additional unit at a later stage.
