The method for traversing a yarn (4) or ribbon on a winder comprises using a drum (1) with a guide slot (8) and winding up to give a random or precision wound package (11); where: (i) the yarn (4) is guided by portions (26, 27) of the slot (8) and an inner drum (24); and (ii) the inner drum (24) can either rotate freely as driven by the yarn (4), or it can be driven independently of the slotted drum (1) to forward the yarn (4).
