An optically transparent container includes a base (20), a sidewall (10) extending from the base (20) and having indicia (16) formed as recesses (18). The recesses (18) are emergent upon an exterior surface (15) of the container and the base (20) includes a sealed compartment (23). A lighting mechanism housed within the compartment (23), includes a battery (27) for activating at least one diode (28) disposed beneath a lowermost extremity of the sidewall (10). A switch mechanism (29) positioned within the compartment (23) includes a touch-sensitive switch for energizing the at least one diode for a predetermined time period when the container is touched. The at least one diode is de-energized when one of the predetermined time period expires and the container is touched subsequently. The at least one light-emitting diode is formed in an orientation wich is other than parallel to a bottom surface (22) of the container.
