A drive system for land vehicles has a trailer (1) with a driving wheel (4) carrying a battery for a motor or a fuel tank for an IC engine. The vehicle itself is a bicycle or an electric car, to which a trailer can be coupled. The trailer drive is controlled from the main vehicle and has a brake and thrust control connected with the steering for the main vehicle. The motor/engine and/or battery can be removed from the trailer. There is a freewheel clutch so that the trailer can give drive assistance or not, as required, and a changeover circuit is provided for switching over to generator operation during braking, with a solar cell used for current supply of the drive motor and/or the storage battery.
