This invention provides a metal gasket (1) and its production method which prevents damage to folded portions (5) by fold-machining and damage to metal materials after fastening, and expands the range of selection of materials for flexible metal plates, by reducing the thickness of a predetermined region of a flexible metal plate (3) at which folded portions (5) are to be formed. The thickness of the folded portion (5) of the flexible metal plate is reduced from the folding side in an inner region of folded base portions (5) and in regions (9) in which folded free ends (13) are positioned. Bend-machining is made gently at the folded base portions (5) subjected to fold-bend machining, and the folded base portions (5) each have a gap (14) there-inside. The folded free ends (13) do not come into contact with the flexible metal plate (3) due to recessed surfaces (8). Accordingly, cracks and wrinkles do not occur at the folded base portions (5), and the folded free ends (13) do not leave friction traces on the flexible metal plate (3).
