A charging apparatus for a multi-unit system comprising: a portable unit including: first and second conductive contacts each of which being disposed within a recess of the portable unit, wherein said recesses are disposed on opposite sides of the portable unit; and rechargeable energy storage means electrically coupled to the first and second conductive contacts; and a base unit including: an indentation formed in the base unit and having a receiving surface shaped to receive at least a portion of the portable unit; first and second spring loaded and thus retractable conductive protrusions extending outwardly beyond the receiving surface opposite each other; and energy source means electrically coupled to the first and second conductive protrusions, wherein the first and second conductive protrusions serve to secure the portable unit when inserted into the base unit and to contact the first and second conductive contacts to allow charging of the portable unit
