A telescope is constituted by an eyepiece (11), a roof prism (12) and a first objective (14). A second objective (22) is placed in front of the first objective (14) to constitute a microscope. The second eyepiece (22) is rotated by operating a lens switch ring (5). A mirror (32) is disposed in front of the second objective (22). The mirror (32) is rotated by operating a mirror switch ring (6). The optical device can be used as a telescope for viewing ahead when the objective (22) and the mirror (32) are kept retreated, and can be used as a telescope for viewing sideways when the mirror (32) is kept advanced. A specimen (26) on a preparation (25) held in a slot (7) can be inspected in magnification by utilizing side light while the second objective (22) and the mirror (32) are kept advanced, and front light can be utilized while the mirror (32) is kept retreated.
