A totally biodegradable material particularly suitable for packaging materials, and especially for storing compostables, and a method for making said material, are disclosed. The material is made from biodegradable matter consisting of at least one natural or synthetic polymer and non-toxic additives, said natural or synthetic polymers being arranged to form a physical gel in the presence of a solvent. Said matter may also be used in a composite material made from a second biodegradable matter consisting of at least one polyester-type synthetic resin. The synthetic resin comprises at least one saturated aliphatic polyester and, in particular, at least one high molecular weight aliphatic linear polyester, e.g. a tetramethylene adipate with a diisocyanate or a diepoxide compound. Said polymers may for example be gelatin, starch, carrageenan, carob and gum arabic. Gelatin is preferred. The additives preferably comprise a plasticizer, particularly a hydroxy compound such as glycerol and/or a cross-linking agent. |
