An apparatus suitable for use in the bonding of portions of sheet material, e.g. shoe components comprises a press having a movable platen 42 and a fixed platen 24, a turntable 60 having a plurality of stations X, Y and Z and rotatable to bring the stations thereof successively between the platens, locking means, e.g. recesses 84 in the undersurface of annular plate 82 and co-operating plunger 86 operated by springs 100 and 108 whereby the turntable can be locked in an operating position with one of the stations locked between the platens, means, e.g. piston and cylinder C4 for moving the movable platen towards the fixed platen thus to effect a pressing operation whereby portions of sheet material between the platens are subjected to bonding pressure, the apparatus being such that the means for moving the movable platen is prevented from operating until the turntable has been locked in an operating position by the locking means and further, the locking means is caused to release the turntable prior to termination of a pressing operation. In operation, rotation of the turntable trips a microswitch MS1 to energize a solenoid valve SV1 (not shown) and exhaust the piston and cylinder arrangement to atmosphere, thus allowing springs 100 and 108 to urge plunger 86 into recess 84, the consequential movement of lever 104 tripping microswitch MS2 to energize solenoid valve SV2 (not shown) to admit air under pressure to piston and cylinder arrangements C2 and C3 to close protective shutters 112 which in turn operate valves V2 and V3 by cam members (not shown) and hence activate pressure switch PS4 (not shown) to energize a pilot solenoid valve and admit air under pressure to piston and cylinder arrangement C4 and also to pressure switch PS5 (not shown) to apply highfrequency potential to the platens and to deenergize the solenoid valve SV1 controlling the piston and cylinder arrangement C1 and to release plunger 86 from its locked position. Timing devices control the period of application of the high-frequency potential and at the termination of this period de-energize solenoid valves SV2 and SV4 and exhaust the piston and cylinder arrangements C2, C3 and C4 to atmosphere.
